Over 120 killed, 100 injured in Bahawalpur oil tanker fire

An oil tanker exploded minutes after it overturned near Bahawalpur in Punjab, leaving at least 125 people dead on Sunday morning, according to Express News.

Over 100 people, including 20 children, were injuries when they reportedly gathered to collect leaking oil from the lorry in Ahmed Pur Sharqia area. Forty people sustained severe burn wounds and are in critical condition.

“At least 123 people have been killed and more than 100 wounded in a fire which erupted after an oil tanker turned over and victims rushed to collect spilt fuel,” senior local government official Rana Mohammad Saleem Afzal said.

Rescue operation is underway and the injured are being shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital and other healthcare facilities in the adjoining cities.

Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa expressed his grief over the deadly incident. He directed full assistance to the civil administration to carry out the rescue works.
Army helicopters have also been sent for evacuation of the injured. Hospitals in the neighbourhood are also put on high alert.
