The fire is affecting water supply in the area with many residents waking up to low pressure or no water at all.

Yorkshire Water apologised to customers, saying the problems were because ‘the fire service is in the area tackling a large fire’.

The inferno broke out at the warehouse complex off Dale Street, Wakefield, shortly after 8pm on Wednesday evening.

Locals said they heard the sound of ‘explosions’ as the flames tore through the building, which is near many residential homes.

One local said she believe fireworks had been set off before realising the industrial estate was ablaze.

Residents were told to keep their windows closed and stay away from the area, with road closures put in place.

However, one local claimed many people were driving to the area to see what was going on.

Jacklyn Ellis, who lives in one of the many houses close to the fire, told Yorkshire Live: ‘I was just putting the baby to bed when this is what we see.

‘People are blocking the drive to watch what’s going off and more are people walking around than on a busy day.

‘I’m scared for anyone close by and hope everyone stays safe and smart.

‘People are still driving down the road, over the fire hoses to just be turned around. People should avoid dale street if they can.’

Firefighters worked through the night to extinguish the blaze.
