The UK has suffered yet another record breaking daily death toll (Picture: Reuters/Getty/REX) Another 1,610 people have died after testing positive for coronavirus, marking the highest number of daily deaths since the outbreak began. It surpasses the previous peak of 1,564 set on Wednesday and comes after the UK was found to have the highest fatality rate in the world.

Today’s number was up steeply from the 599 deaths reported yesterday, although there is often a lag in reporting new deaths after the weekend. It brings the UK’s total death toll to 91,470, the fifth highest in the world. Fatalities counted by the Department of Health include those who have died within 28 days of testing positive.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies for deaths where Covid-19 has been mentioned on the death certificate, together with additional data on fatalities in recent days, show there have now been 108,000 deaths involving Covid-19 in the UK. The Government also said that, as of 9am this morning, there had been a further 33,355 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK. It brings the total number of cases in the UK to 3,466,849, also the fifth highest in the world.
