Joe Biden leads Donald Trump by more than 6 percentage points among likely voters in Pennsylvania, according to a new survey of the swing state that could determine the outcome of the White House race.

USA Today/Suffolk University poll released Wednesday reports that 48.6 percent of Pennsylvania likely voters prefer the Democratic nominee, while 42.4 percent favor the Republican incumbent.

Biden’s advantage represents an improvement on his average performance in other recent Pennsylvania polling. According to a RealClearPolitics average of surveys conducted in the state from Oct. 4-19, he is 3.5 percentage points ahead of Trump.

Trump won Pennsylvania by less than 1 percentage point in 2016. His ability to flip that state and the two Midwestern battlegrounds of Michigan and Wisconsin helped secure his Electoral College victory.

But Biden — a native of Scranton, Pa., with close ties to Pennsylvania developed during his decades as a senator from neighboring Delaware — has been working to win back the state widely viewed as a potential tipping point in the November election.

Trump held a campaign rally Tuesday night in Erie, Pa., and Barack Obama will headline a drive-in rally Wednesday in Philadelphia — the former president’s first in-person event on behalf of Biden’s campaign.

The USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll was conducted Oct. 15-19, surveying 500 likely Pennsylvania general election voters with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.
