The Sunday night siege outside Delhi police headquarters against alleged atrocities on Jamia university students and the Citizenship Amendment Act has spilled into early hours of Monday with the demonstrating groups, including students from Jawaharlal Nehru University, refusing to vacate the busy traffic intersection.
The protestors have blocked the busy road outside the central Delhi office compound and are raising slogans against alleged ill-treatment of students of the Jamia Millia Islamia University during a police crackdown on miscreants who had allegedly infiltrated a peaceful protest by varsity student and indulged in violence and arson in South Delhi earlier in the day.
Several opposition political leaders also visited the latest protest hot-spot in the capital to express solidarity with the protesting students.
Special Commissioner crime, Satish Golcha met the protestors who demanded the release of more than 40 students who had been detained at Kalkaji police station. Some of the detained students were taken to AIIMS for treatment to injuries, said social activist Harsh Mander.
Violent protests took place at South Delhi’s New Friends Colony area on Sunday afternoon, when a crowd of over 2000 protestors including students from Jamia Millia Islamia University were stopped from marching towards the busy Ring road. Some protestors hurled crude bombs and burnt down several vehicles including three public transport buses leading to ‘lathi-charge’ and tear gas firing by the police.
A violent confrontation also took place near Jamia Millia Islamia University and the metro station nearby, where both sides pelted stones at each other, following which, cops entered the campus and cleared it of around 150 students, some of whom were in the library. University administration said the police entered the premises without permission. Sounds of students screaming could be heard emanating from the campus with the Delhi Police firing tear gas shells.
Jamia university administration said students did not participate in the violence and blamed some anti-social elements instead.
Delhi Police said one Head Constable, Maqsool Ahmad received severe head injuries and was admitted to the ICU and several other senior officers like the southeast district Deputy Commissioner of Police, Additional DCP South, two Assistant Commissioners of Police, 5 Station House Officers and Inspectors were also injured along with several other police personnel in the violence and stone-pelting by violent agitators.
A south Delhi hospital official said 26 students from Jamia university were treated for minor injuries and discharged while two police personnel were still being treated for head injuries, possibly from stone-pelting.
Delhi Metro has suspended services at 15 metro stations including–Delhi Gate, Pragati Maidan, GTB, Shivaji Stadium, Patel Chowk, Vishwavidyalaya, Vasant Vihar, Munirka, RK Puram, Sukhdev Vihar, Jamia Millia Islamia, Okhla Vihar, Jasola Vihar and Shaheen Bagh– as precautionary measure.
All schools in Okhla, Jamia, New Friends Colony and Madanpur Khadar area of the national capital will remain closed on Monday, said Deputy Chief Minister of the national capital Manish Sisodia
