Mahad Adib Mahamud has lived in Norway for 17 years. But now UDI taken from him citizenship after anonymous tip that he cheated when he came to the country.

– I’m from Brumunddal! But suddenly, overnight, I have become a foreigner. A stateless man.

Mahad came alone to Norway when he was 14 years old, took education, acquired family, home and a steady job as a bioengineer at Ullevål hospital.

But after 17 years unravels everything. UDI alleges he lied to Norwegian citizenship when he arrived as unaccompanied minor asylum seeker.

Mahad has documents showing that he is from Somalia, but UDI claims that he comes from neighboring Djibouti. It denies Djiboutian authorities, who will not accept that he be sent there. Thus he must live as stateless in Norway, without any rights.

– I can not go to the doctor if I get sick. I have no social security that could prove who I am, says 30-year-old TV 2.

January 20, he loses work permit as a result of that citizenship is revoked. He sold the house he had built for the family in Nittedal, to clear his name in court.

Will prevent cheating

Immigration Minister Sylvi Listhaug has given UDI more money to examine old cases, take those who have cheated, and send them out – no matter how long they have been in the country.

TV 2 has previously told the UDI will retain the approximately 200 positions they received during the asylum crisis, the clear guidance from Listhaug that they will go through old cases to uncover people who lied about their identity when they sought asylum.

– It may deter others from doing the same. They should know that if you lie to the Norwegian authorities, so will not the authorities to give up, says Listhaug TV2.

But the opposition in Parliament will stop Listhaug and leave the decision in such cases to the courts.

OR, Labor, MGD, Party and the Liberal behind the proposal to stop List Haug plans to undergo old asylum cases to uncover cheating and depriving more immigrants citizenship.

– To deprive someone of citizenship is one of the most serious one state can do. We need to ensure legal certainty for those receiving state against them. Therefore it is important that it is that the courts are handing down this treatment, says SV Heikki Holmås TV2.

He says that the consequence is that more people are stateless in Norway, with no possibility to support themselves. It is unworthy, mean Holmås.

rule of law

Listhaug says it is remarkable that the Labour Party will liberalize asylum and immigration policy, but Aps Helga Pedersen says that this is about the rule of law.

– We do not go in for some liberalization. If you are considering taking citizenship from anyone, should evidence be considered carefully, and the terms have to get a defender.

KrF will probably also support the proposal under treatment in Parliament, and thus is likely to Listhaug goes on a failure in one of its major initiatives this year.

UDI can revoke citizenship and declare it invalid if it is given on an incorrect basis. This can happen if a person has given incorrect or incomplete information or withheld information.

Since 2012, 135 persons deprived of citizenship because UDI believes they have cheated. Now preparing UDI cases against hundreds of people, who have lived in Norway for years. There is no statute of limitations in these cases. A suspicion that you lied to 20 years ago or more, thus punishing itself today.

Only 9 of the 135 who lost their citizenship from 2012 until today, has been sent back. With List Haugs commitment becomes thereby increasingly more stateless in Norway, without rights and the ability to support themselves.

Norway has a stricter practice than our neighboring countries in this regard. Neither Finland, Iceland or Sweden withdraws citizenship, and also Denmark has more restrictions on this.
