Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea vow to enhance relations
Djibouti ready for reconciliation with Eritrea
After attending the third summit of the Forum of China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in Beijing from September 3-4, 2018, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) arrived in Asmara on Wednesday for a two day official visit and discussed both with the President of Eritrea and conferred at a tripartite meeting held between Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea.
Consequently, the leaders agreed to enhance the relation between the three and hence signed the tripartite agreement which includes a comprehensive cooperation to advance the goals of the peoples’ of the three countries, building of close political, economic, social, cultural and security ties, and coordination to promote regional peace and security, the Joint Declaration on Comprehensive Cooperation Between Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea reads.
According to the joint declaration, the tripartite agreement also invokes the close ties of geography, history, culture and religion, and vital common interests of the peoples of these three countries and the desire to strengthen these ties while respecting each other’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Furthermore, the three leaders agreed to work in coordination to promote regional peace and security.
In a related news, Ethiopia also reopened its embassy in Asmara on Thursday September 7, 2018.
It is to be recalled that Eritrea reopened its Embassy in Addis Ababa back in July and Ethiopia appointed Redwan Hussein as its ambassador to Eritrea.
In another development, the Ethiopian, Eritrean and Somali Foreign Affairs Ministers, Workneh Gebeyehu (PhD), Osman Saleh and Ahmed Isse Awad, respectively, traveled to Djibouti on Thursday September 7, 2018, to advance dialogue between Eritrea and Djibouti.
The visit is the first initiative of the Joint High-Level Committee established by the three countries at the tripartite summit held in Asmara. The ministers will also discuss ways to advance peace and security in the region, it was noted.
After the discussion between their foreign ministers and Djiboutian officials, it was reported that Eritrea and Djibouti have agreed to normalize their relation after a decade of border conflict which led the two to military clashes.
Fighting erupted along the disputed Dumeira area after Djibouti accused Asmara of sending troops across the border. However, after a long period of separation Eritrea and Djibouti have agreed to restore ties, Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, Workneh Gebeyehu (PhD), said on his Facebook page.
Similarly, Eritrea’s Information Minister, Yemane Gebremeskal said on Twitter that Ismaïl Omar Guelleh told the ministers, “Djibouti is ready for reconciliation and formalization of its ties with Eritrea.”
