President Donald Trump on Tuesday accused New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio of having “no imagination” for using a slogan that the president has also displayed at his rallies — though the phrase has been used by many politicians before.

“Bill DeBlasio, the high taxing Mayor of NYC, just stole my campaign slogan: PROMISES MADE PROMISES KEPT! That’s not at all nice. No imagination! @foxandfriends” the president tweeted.

De Blasio stood in front of a sign Monday that said “Promises Made, Promises Kept” at a groundbreaking for a new school in the neighborhood of East New York, which is set to open in 2020. The mayor, a Democrat, has criticized Trump and his policies.

De Blasio’s spokesman Eric Phillips told the New York Daily News that the phrase was generic.

“This is stupid,” he said. “It is not novel rhetoric.”

Trump began using the slogan in September 2017, after he released a video highlighting an order he signed on expanding apprenticeships and vocational training. Since then, the slogan has been used at a number of rallies, where the phrases “Promises Made” and “Promises Kept” are displayed on blue signs on each side of Trump’s lectern.

The president’s campaign has also created a website, promiseskept.com, that lists Trump’s accomplishments.

The slogan, however, isn’t a unique one or coined by Trump.

President Bill Clinton and his vice president Al Gore used the slogan in their re-election campaign in 1996.

Michigan Gov. John Engler in 1994 also used “Promises Made, Promises Kept” for his re-election campaign.

The phrase was also used in 2012 by Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, a Democrat, for a “tribal relations report” published by his administration.
