14 killed, 42 wounded in Lashkargah car suicide bombing

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Fourteen people were killed and dozens more were wounded in a car suicide bombing in Lashkargah city of southern Helmand province on Friday, officials said.

The blast took place at the entrance to the Ghazi Ayub Khan stadium in the limits ​​of the first security zone in Lashkargah city, killing 14 people and injuring another 42, including children who had gathered to watch a wrestling match in the venue, said Omar Zwak, the governor’s spokesman.

He said the attacker wanted to enter the stadium with his explosive device, but he was identified by police who started firing at the attacker who then blew his explosives up.

Some houses and 16 vehicles were also destroyed in the blast.

Helmand police chief Abdul Ghafar Sapi put the toll at 10 killed and 40 injured in the attack.

Officials at the Emergency hospital said they had been delivered four bodies and 37 wounded people from the scene.

Public health director Dr. Aminullah Abid said 45 injured and 13 bodies had been evacuated to hospital and they included both security officials and civilians.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack that follows a Wednesday attack in Kabul in which dozens of people were killed and wounded. The Kabul attack was claimed by Daesh or so-called Islamic State group.
