ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn submitted a letter of resignation to relinquish power as FDRE Prime Minister.

In his brief and televised speech yesterday, Premier Hailemariam said he is awaiting Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front and Parliament’s approvals to resign as FDRE Prime Minister and the Front’s Chairperson adding that he continues to serve as Premier until procedures are followed and his resignation is accepted.

Hailemariam also said the country is at crossroads and caught between the government’s effort to reform itself and respond to public demands and violent protests that claimed human lives and caused property damage.
He believed that his resignation is part of the government’s effort to bring lasting peace and stability in the country.
According to Hailemariam Southern People’s Democratic Movement which is one of the four parties that make up EPRDF has accepted his resignation as Chairperson of the Movement and expressed his conviction that his resignation would also be accepted both by his Party and Parliament.
The upcoming EPRDF’s assembly would democratically elect his successor.
He also expressed his belief that there would be a peaceful transfer of power what he said would mark great time in the history of the country.
The government is trying to resolve ongoing crisis and restore stability through different mechanisms , he said while urging the nation, nationalities and peoples of the country to continue living in harmony and strengthen peaceful coexistence.
Hailemariam who had served as Ethiopian Foreign Minister assumed the premiership after the death of former Prime Minister Meles Zenawi in 2012 to which he has been serving till now.
