Ethiopia’s Prime Minister, Hailemariam Desalegn

Hailemariam Desalegn’s resignation today is from the chairmanship of the EPRDF, but will amount to his departure from the Prime Minister’s role in due times, according to people in the government.

His request to resign, second to an earlier made during the EPRDF`s Executive Committee meeting held in December 2017, has been accepted by the top leadership of the ruling party this time. One of the agenda items Hailemariam tabled to an emergency meeting of the EPRDF`s senior leadership of 45, he has attributed his decision to resign to the country’s current political situations requiring “new leadership” and he may have believed he is not capable of handling the crises, according to people familiar with the issue.Senior leaders of Hailemariam’s party in the ruling coalition, SEPDM, have been pushing him to leave the chairmanship of the EPRDF during their Central Committee meeting held last week, sources disclosed to Fortune. Hailemariam will stay in his current position until the EPRDF`s Council of 180 meets to elect a new chairperson. So will he remain to serve as Prime Minister until the EPRDF, a party which controls Parliament, second its new chairman for the premiership, people in the ruling party told Fortune. This story is developing and tune to updates.
