President Donald Trump on Wednesday recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, drawing a flurry of condemnation from the Arab world and Western allies.

A Security Council meeting on the issue has been requested by Britain, France, Sweden, Bolivia, Uruguay, Italy, Senegal and Egypt.

The American decision will have a very negative consequences on the peace process, which was based upon considering Jerusalem as a final settlement case that will be stated through negotiations, Ambassador Amr Aboulatta said.

“What we witness today reflects the severe fear by the international community towards one of the cases that is on the list of the Security Council since its establishment, which is the Palestinian case,” Aboulatta said.

The international community has managed in the modern age through the UN to set legal determinants to deal with the Jerusalem case, he said, since the UN decided to resort to the two-state solution of UN Security Council Resolution 181.

“The issue of holy Jerusalem goes back to history, and the attachment of the people of the world from the three religions to it goes back hundreds of years,” Aboulatta added.

Thousands of Palestinians demonstrated, scores were hurt and at least one killed in clashes with Israeli troops on a “day of rage” on Friday against the US decision.

Hundreds of Egyptians demonstrated on Friday in Cairo and Alexandria against the US decision.

Several Arab and Asian countries have also witnessed protests against Trump’s decision.

The move broke with US longstanding policy that the status of the city must be determined in negotiations with the Palestinians who seek to establish an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
