A man in his 20s was arrested at Gothenburg’s Landvetter Airport after a suspicious object was found in his luggage.
Parts of a departure hall at Landvetter Airport was cordoned off by police on Thursday after security screening detected the suspicious object. The bomb squad was called in and the cordons later lifted.

The man was arrested on suspicion of attempted devastation endangering the public, said police in a statement.

He was travelling to another EU country, said police, but was seized while attempting to go through the security checks for domestic departures.

Police said on Thursday evening they were not yet able to confirm exactly what the suspicious object was, but said they were treating it as a potentially dangerous object pending further examination.

No more information about the suspect has been released.

Sweden’s security police Säpo said they were aware of the case, but were not involved in the investigation at this stage.

According to unconfirmed reports in newspapers Aftonbladet and Göteborgs-posten (GP), the object was the explosive substance TATP (triacetone triperoxide). The substance is difficult to detect and has been used in several terror attacks, including the November 2015 Paris attacks and the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing.

Deputy chief prosecutor Bengt-Olof Berggren told GP the man is a German national.

He denies the allegations, his lawyer told the newspaper.
