Horndiplomat- Exclusive interview with Dr. Anjanette DeCarlo, Ph.D.,Resident Research Scholar REDSEA Cultural Center, Hargeysa. Research Scholar, Institute for Environmental Diplomacy and Security, University of Vermont and Project Director, Conserve Cal Madow; Frankincense Systems Analysis. A former Visiting Professor of Environmental Studies at St. Michael’s College. Previously she was a Senior Jeffords Fellow at the Institute for Environmental Diplomacy & Security at the University of Vermont (UVM). Her Ph.D. in natural resources from UVM focused on environment, women’s empowerment, and conflict resolution as a merged agenda for sustainable development. She is currently working on reconciliation in post-war countries as well as the power of trade and commerce to create peace in conflictzones.
As a development consultant with 20 years field experience, she specializes in Africa, Latin America, and the United States.

Dr. DeCarlo  is investigating the health of the frankincense trees and ways to create sustainable supply chains to protect the frankincense trees and people who depend on them. She first came to Somaliland in 2010, and has recently visited again in October and January. So far she and her team have visited 20% of major harvesting sites in the growing region and interviewed almost 200 stakeholders. Frankincense is Somaliland’s third largest export, after livestock and fodder, and the industry supports thousands of people across the country. The resin has been harvested in Somaliland for thousands of years, and today it is used in cosmetics, aromatherapy, and medicine.
