Dubai: Dubai Police have arrested a nine-member gang for robbing Dh14 million from a money transporting vehicle.

Major-General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant to the Dubai Police Chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs said on Monday that the nine Asian suspects were arrested in a neighbouring emirate within 12 hours and the money was recovered from them.

Giving details about the arrests, Maj General Al Mansouri said police received a call about a vehicle used to transport money being robbed in Al Muraqqabat area last Thursday.

He said investigations revealed that the money was robbed when employees of a money transporting firm were loading money into an ATM.

“The gang robbed Dh14 million from them and fled to an unknown destination,” he said.

Colonel Adel Al Joker, head of investigation at Dubai Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said more than one teams were formed to solve the case and nab the suspects.

“The suspects were found within 12 hours hiding in a neighbouring emirate. Following a chasing operation, the investigation team was able to arrest the nine suspects from one of the industrial zones of that emirate,” he said. “We also found the sketches they used to plan and commit the robbery.”

Colonel Al Joker pointed out that Dubai Police are fully prepared to handle such crimes and any challenges.

Dubai Police will make it mandatory for money transport companies in the country to use a new bag or box with strong security features to transport money, which will help end incidents of robberies from money transporting vehicles.

Maj General Al Mansouri announced earlier said that they will ask money transporting companies to use the bag with strong security features from the beginning of next year (2018).

The new bags are being designed to foil any robbery attempt, he said. Some of its features include an alarm and the emission of thick smoke from the bag in case of a robbery attempt to scare the thieves and a GPS system to track the bag

According to police, Dh600 billion is transported through vehicles in the UAE every year.

While this is the first crime of its kind reported in Dubai this year, other emirates have seen an uptick in attacks on money transporting operations in the recent years, most notably by criminal gangs that appear to be operating from some African countries.
