The source informed that the Syrian army and its allied militias managed to fully recapture the city of Albukamal, backed by Russian forces, while pointed out that the army troops are working on cleansing the area from landmines and bombs left by the Islamic State militants in the city.

The Syrian army managed, early this month, to expel the Islamic State group from the city, after three years of the extremist group control over the city; however, the Islamic State managed to recapture the city after few days.

The Islamic State tried to use booby-trapped vehicles and suicide bombers to hinder the advance of the security forces, but the army troops managed to besiege the city and fully recapture it, the source explained.

Meanwhile, SANA news reported that the Syrian army and allied militias are eliminating the last strongholds of the Islamic State in the city, while the military engineers are working on dismantling landmines and other explosives in the streets and neighborhoods.

Also, covering the Islamic State news, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights revealed that the Syrian army, along with its allies, including the Lebanese Hezbollah militia, Iranian Revolutionary Guards and the Iraqi combat group, managed to retake the city, and forces the Islamic State militants to withdraw towards the Euphrates River.

Moreover, the clashes are currently taking place in the vicinity of Albukamal, which considered the last stronghold of the Islamic State in Syria. The Islamic State is still controlling 25% of the province of Deir Ezzor, which is located on borders with Iraq, the SOHR explained.

Furthermore, the SOHR reported that at least 31 members of the regime forces and allied militias were killed, while the Islamic State group lost more than 50 fighters in the last few days.

It is noteworthy that the the so-called Islamic State of Syria and Iraq was formed in 2014 with an aim to revive the Islamic caliphate in large areas of Iraq and Syria.
